The tax deadline is almost here, and millions of taxpayers will need more time to get their paperwork to the IRS. Liberty Tax Service assists taxpayers who need to request an automatic six-month extension to file their taxes, but Liberty reminds that an extension to file is not an extension to pay. Taxpayers who owe taxes must pay by the April 18 filing deadline or they may incur penalties and interest.
Last year, about 13 million taxpayers requested a six-month extension to file their federal income tax returns. To receive the extension, taxpayers can submit Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File. The extension gives taxpayers until Oct. 15 to file their taxes and can help taxpayers avoid a late filing penalty. However, those who owe taxes must estimate how much they owe and make payment by the filing deadline. Taxpayers will be charged interest on any tax that is not paid on time.
Taxpayers may be unable to pay all they owe. For those taxpayers, the IRS offers payment options, including an installment agreement.
Liberty Tax Service assists taxpayers who need to file for an extension. Participating Liberty Tax offices offer the service free of charge.
